The formation of muscular tissue is an example of anabolism. This is perhaps the most famous anabolic process because it is often in the media in relation to the class of drugs called anabolic steroids, sometimes abused by athletes . Those drugs increase the growth of muscles.
Another important example is photosynthesis, where a 6-carbon molecule (glucose) is formed from 1-carbon molecules from the air (carbon dioxide). The inverse process, which is respiration, is catabolic.
Catabolism has the same prefix as catacombs, which are places reserved for the dead. Catacombs are a famous tourist attraction in Paris. The prefix cata is associated with death because it relates to the degradation of molecules.
